OCR: AM/FM ELECTRONIC DREAMS MUSIC WITH A VISION We here at AM/FM have "discovered" a music label in England who are purely into *exactly what should interest almost each and every AM/FM reader. A little music label with only electronic/synthesized music, big enough to be able to make professional products, but still small enough to notice the individual customer and the individual artist: ELECTRONIC DREAMS. ELECTRONIC DREAMS helps unknown artists working with electronic synthesizer music to get their material distributed. It sounds like an excellent opportunity to many AM/FM readers. And not only that, but they store lots of great cassettes with exactly this type of music, composed and produced by unknown but talented artists. AM/FM has got an agreement with ELECTRONIC DREAMS, and in the future, we will be reviewing tapes that are sent to us from this label. We will be absolute* sincere in our our reviews, and if we think that a tape is worth buying for the price they're asking, then we will let you know. It's GREAT fun to collect music by artists who you can relate to, i.e. they're not big-shots, stars or millionaires, but simply people JUST like you, me and all the other AM/FM readers, who dig into their equipment and try to get the best out of it. Some of them, some of YOU, are really talented, and tapes like this show it! Besides offering different low-cost, but high-quality, tapes for sale, Electronic Dreams are also planning their first CD release. I'm sure CD will be the media for the future, also for ELECTRONIC DREAMS. In the next issue, we will review one of the most selling tapes from ELECTRONIC DREAMS, which is titled "Haven", and the artist is Steve Charlton. Right now, we will write a little bit of background story, to let you know why we here at AM/FM has caught special interest in this label. ED (Electronic Dreams) started life in 1987 as a vehicle for a largely unrecognized music that heavily combines the visual arts. A brief history of this music reveals some surprises for example, one of the most familiar names is Vangelis. This artist has been producing his own special brand of music for well over 25 years. However, it was eventually in 1981 when the talented composer, after years of unrecognition, finally made his mark with the award winning film soundtrack, Chariots of Fire. This, and a successful string of albums with Jon Anderson, lead singer in the group YES, suddenly put his name in "the lights". Many soundtracks followed, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, most notably, which established him even more in the ever watchful eye of the media. By and large, Vangelis has deliberately kept a low profile to ensure that he can remain working on his own style of electronic synthesizer compositions. In the late 60's a group in Germany began recording their own special kind of music. TANGERINE DREAM were at the forefront of an exciting new sound, incorporating acoustic and electronic instrumentation. What followed in the 70's was an era producing classic music, even today with high technology music equipment, unrivalled and remaining individual in it's style and power. The impact of electronic music has been limited mainly due to poor exposure in the media, however it could be this limitation that has also led to it's longevity. Television and, again film, has provided the greatest exposure: music backing wildlife documentaries, etc. This type of exposure has definitely kept it within the ear of the aficonado. In the 1980's, new independent labels had been attempting to reach a new and younger audience who, tired of the meaningless pop drival, were searching for a more serious kind of music, making use of the latest synthesizer technology. In 1987 one such aficonado, Clive Littlewood, started his own label, ELECTRONIC DREAMS, an offshott from his already successful distribution label of the same name. Clive's aim with ELECTRONIC DREAMS is to promote local, national, and international unknown talented composers who have their wares to offer the listeners of electronic, synthesizer, and instrumental music. Into the 1990's, "Cleve" hopes to expand the boundaries of cassettes and release his first compact disc, which will propel him even further into the high energy world of music. It is commendable that Cleve would take on the awesome task of promoting this type of music, but his dedication and hard work are spured on simply by his love of electronic music, and this is usually the right ingredient for success. Reviews of various cassettes from the Electronic Dreams label will start in the next AM/FM!
